Dr. Oleg Gladishev, a Russian nutrition specialist, said that eating garlic on an empty stomach can harm the digestive system. Some people consume large amounts of garlic on an empty stomach to compensate for vitamin deficiencies, particularly vitamin (C), but this practice can cause uncomfortable digestive problems.
The specialist highlighted the risks for people with digestive diseases and explained that although garlic is commonly regarded as a major source of vitamin (C), excessive consumption is not advisable. Garlic is rich in vitamins (B) and (C), as well as manganese, selenium, copper, phosphorus and zinc, but its strong, pungent taste makes it difficult to eat enough of it to meet the body’s requirements.
Dr. Oleg also pointed out that garlic stimulates the secretion of stomach acid and can cause inflammation and irritation of the lining of the small and large intestines, resulting in gas and pain. People with digestive-system problems should therefore be particularly careful when consuming it.
In his final recommendations, the specialist stressed the need to consult a doctor before consuming any food that may have a stimulating or harmful effect on the digestive system.
