Sasan Awni, Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, visited the Erbil Heavy Wastewater Treatment Plant to inspect and follow up on the progress of work. The project is being implemented by Auzan Company at a cost of $579 million from the Kurdistan Regional Government’s budget.
The Minister of Municipalities and Tourism met with the company’s management and staff and followed up on the progress of the work. He then inspected the project’s sections and issued guidance and instructions to the implementing company and the ministry’s engineering team to ensure that the work is completed on schedule, in accordance with the design and to the highest standards.
At the meeting, Sasan Awni stressed: “This project is one of the strategic projects of the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government. It is being implemented by a decision of Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister, and is a long-standing dream for the city of Erbil.”
The Minister of Municipalities also noted that this step complements the emergency water-supply project which, by decision of the Prime Minister, rescued Erbil from its water-shortage crisis. At the same time, the plant is the largest project serving Erbil’s environment, protecting groundwater, preventing soil contamination, safeguarding public health and supporting the area’s agricultural sector. It is the first of its kind in Iraq and will also play a key role in irrigating green areas, the green belt and agricultural production.
It is worth noting that the foundation stone for this strategic project was laid on November 16, 2025, by Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
