Research by pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk has shown that popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs can slow patients' biological ageing process. An examination of the molecular clocks of people taking these drugs showed that the biological age of various organs in their bodies, including the heart, had decreased by between two and four years.
Despite these results, scientists say that, because of their effect on the roots of the ageing process, this class of drugs could act as life-extending medicines. However, side effects such as reduced muscle mass exist, and the effect of these drugs on non-obese people has not yet been proven.
