The US newspaper The Wall Street Journal reported that US President Donald Trump said Tuesday night, in response to a question about whether the war against Iran had contributed to the Republicans’ weak election results: “Iran was part of the reasons.”
The newspaper also noted that, despite acknowledging the war’s impact on the election results, Donald Trump reiterated that he does not in any way regret his decision to launch the war at the beginning of this year.
The US president made the comments as the war against Iran has continued for more than eight months, with its consequences causing a significant rise in energy prices. They also come amid sharp criticism from prominent Republican figures and US administration officials, who have cited the war as a factor in some of the losses and defeats suffered by their party in the elections.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that, after securing victories in several states, the Democratic Party regained control of the US Senate, while the outcome of the majority of seats in the House of Representatives had still not been officially determined because the vote-counting process was continuing.
