Iraq’s Federal Integrity Commission revealed, in a wide-ranging operation at the Traffic Directorate of Salahaddin Governorate, a major corruption case involving the manipulation of 56,164 fine receipts and the theft of more than 2 billion dinars.
After detailed follow-up, the teams of the Salahaddin Investigation Office found that the corruption took the following form: the official responsible for the fines section and for stealing driving licences and vehicle registration (an officer with the rank of colonel) manipulated 34,164 fine receipts and stole 1,853,200,000 dinars. Another officer with the rank of colonel also seized 22,000 fine receipts and stole 339,135,000 dinars
The investigations also included three other officers (one brigadier general and two colonels), who are accused of facilitating the commission of that corruption and preventing its discovery through negligence in checking the receipts.
The Integrity Commission indicated that the total number of suspects is 31, including the former director and employees of the traffic department and the Agricultural Bank. So far, 10 people have been arrested and detained for investigation; arrest warrants have also been issued for the others, and efforts to apprehend them are continuing. The investigation file was referred under Article 315 of the Penal Code.
