The US president said his support for Benjamin Netanyahu played a key role in achieving an unexpected result in Israel’s parliamentary elections and turned the prospect of defeat into victory.
Donald Trump, the US president, told reporters while returning from an election rally in the state of Texas late Tuesday night into Wednesday: His support for Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, helped Netanyahu achieve a much better result than had been predicted in the parliamentary election. Trump believes that support turned the prospect of a certain defeat into a close contest and perhaps even a well-deserved victory.
The US president said: "I have actually heard that he achieved a very good result; the contest is very close, and that is a very good thing. When I announced my support for him, it helped him tremendously."
According to the preliminary election results in Israel, Netanyahu’s bloc has so far won 27 seats, while Gadi Eisenkot’s bloc has secured 21 seats. At the same time, the Arab lists have managed to win 15 seats.
