Mazloum Abdi, adviser to Syria’s presidency, said that integrating Kurdish forces into Syria’s official military institutions is a historic step in favor of the Kurds and that these forces will currently become stronger and more influential.
Today, Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Mazloum Abdi revealed during a meeting with a group of residents of the city of Amuda that the current strategic decision is to integrate all the forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF / HSD) into the Syrian army and have them operate officially in their own areas, so that residents of the region assume responsibility for protecting their towns.
Regarding the details of organizing and dividing the forces, Abdi said that 1,700 members of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) will serve as border guards. He added that the military police, commando units, counterterrorism units (YAT) and special forces will officially resume their duties after completing a short training course in Damascus and Al-Nabk.
At the same time, hundreds of personnel from the SDF intelligence apparatus will join the General Intelligence Directorate and continue working at their current locations.
The adviser to Syria’s presidency also added that special military brigades will be formed for residents of the areas of Dêrik, Qamishli, Hasakah, Kobani and Afrin, including the “Afrin Brigade,” which consists of 1,500 armed personnel, on the condition that these forces remain exclusively in their own areas and that no armed forces be brought in from outside those areas. He emphasized that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have now become stronger and more effective and are operating officially and legally under the umbrella of the state.
