Zom’s story began with the establishment of a dairy plant in the Mergasor area, but its goal extends beyond producing milk and dairy products. It is directly linked to agriculture, livestock farming and the incomes of local farmers. The project’s foundation stone was laid in 2020, and it was officially opened by the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government on 30 May 2023. The plant was established in the village of Zhajook, in the Mergasor district of the Barzan area.
Zom is not merely a dairy production plant; it is an important national project for developing agriculture and livestock farming in the Kurdistan Region, and marks the beginning of a new phase in livestock and agricultural practices across the region. By developing the capacity of local farmers, improving livestock breeds, providing veterinary services, expanding animal-feed production and creating a stable market for milk and agricultural products, the Zom project has increased the incomes of farming families and laid the foundations for a stronger economy in rural areas.
One of the most important aspects of the Zom project is collecting milk from farmers and villagers and processing it into dairy products.
The Zom project operates 28 milk collection centers in different areas, allowing farmers to deliver their milk to the centers more easily while reducing the cost and burden of transportation. By purchasing milk from livestock farmers, the Zom project provides them with a steady income.
Zom’s products include yogurt, milk, cheese, ayran and cream, available in various sizes and flavors. In this way, the project has created a link between livestock farming, milk collection and production.
According to the data, more than 400 employees work on the Zom project, and more than 3,300 farmers have directly benefited from its activities. The amount of milk collected daily at the centers also reached nearly 40 tonnes in spring 2026.
