A number of Kurdish students held a protest today, Tuesday, in the city of Afrin in Western Kurdistan, demanding education in their mother tongue.
Following a call by the Afrin and Aleppo Students’ Association, a protest was held today, Tuesday, in the city of Afrin. The students called for their education problem to be resolved in Kurdish and for them to be integrated into the education process.
The protest was held in front of the (Newroz) School on the Rajo Road in central Afrin. Participants read a protest statement while raising the slogans “There is no life without language” and “Language is existence and identity.”
The statement called on the relevant authorities to resolve the issue of education in Kurdish and reintegrate the teachers and students who had returned from the Jazira Region into the education process. They also called for the Education Ministry’s decision regarding the designation of the “transitional stage” to be implemented.
Another part of the protest noted that, despite the schools having opened their doors nearly two months ago, approximately one thousand students in grades nine and twelve remain deprived of education and are awaiting the start of the transitional stage.
During the protest and demonstration, the students’ representatives handed their memorandum and demands to Arif Sido, head of the Afrin Educational Community.
