French authorities announced Monday a partial curfew in several northern cities across the country during Monday and Tuesday nights, as an emergency security measure to control the streets after violence and unrest erupted during Saturday’s protests against the rising cost of living.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said in a statement that, because of disruptive acts and clashes, a curfew would be imposed from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. during these two nights. The measure currently covers 4 northern cities, the most prominent of which is the city of "Lille," one of the centers where the greatest tensions were recorded.
Alongside imposing the curfew, the French government announced a partial ban on holding any kind of protest or gathering in the capital, Paris, on Monday night, with the aim of preventing the tensions from escalating and protecting public property, while thousands of police officers have been placed on standby.
