The Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc in the Kurdistan Parliament issued a statement marking two years since the sixth-term election, stressing the need to immediately reactivate parliament, elect its leadership and carry out its legal and historic duties without tying them to political disputes.
Text of the KDP bloc’s statement marking the two-year anniversary of the sixth-term Kurdistan Parliament election:
Today marks two years since the sixth-term Kurdistan Parliament election was held. On that day, the citizens of the Kurdistan Region voted with a high level of participation and responsibility, expressing their will to protect the Kurdistan Region and secure a bright future for it. Unfortunately, however, the Kurdistan Parliament remains inactive and has been unable to fulfill the expected legal duties assigned to it within the governance system of the Kurdistan Region.
Accordingly, we in the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, while reaffirming our steadfast position on respecting the principles of democracy and the effectiveness of the Region’s institutions, reiterate that we have always been ready to reactivate parliament and convene its meetings. We have also always owned and supported every step and initiative presented for this purpose. Therefore, we call on all respected blocs of the Kurdistan Parliament to fulfill, together and as soon as possible, our historic and legal duty, and to take steps toward completing the procedures and duties of parliament’s first session and electing its leadership, as an important first step toward reactivating the Kurdistan Parliament, and in order to respect and respond to the demands of all segments and strata of the Kurdistan Region to expedite the reactivation of parliament.
Our bloc also reaffirms its commitment to the KDP’s voters and the people of Kurdistan, and believes that the duty of protecting the entity of the Kurdistan Region and its higher interests rests with all parliamentary blocs and members. Therefore, the reactivation of parliament must not be tied to any political or partisan interest or dispute, because this concerns the legitimacy of the people’s vote and the legitimacy of the continued existence of the Kurdistan Region’s entity.
Finally, we hope that this unfavorable situation will pass and that, with a shared vision and to advance the interests of the Kurdistan Region, we will all together respect the rights and will of the people of Kurdistan by reactivating parliament, and take steps together toward a new phase of parliamentary work and the advancement of the Region’s legal and governance process in all respects.
