On the second anniversary of the sixth-term Kurdistan Parliament elections, the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc in parliament issued a statement and announced the KDP’s readiness to activate parliament.
In the statement, the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc said: “Today marks two years since the sixth-term Kurdistan Parliament elections were held; a day on which the citizens of the Kurdistan Region voted with a high level of participation and a sense of responsibility, expressing their determination to preserve and build a bright future for the Kurdistan Region. Unfortunately, however, the Kurdistan Parliament is still inactive and has been unable to carry out its expected legal duties within the governance system of the Kurdistan Region.”
The statement continued: “Therefore, we in the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, while reaffirming our steadfast position in respecting the principles of democracy and the effectiveness of the institutions of the Kurdistan Region, once again emphasize that we have always been ready to activate parliament and hold its sessions. We have also always supported and backed all steps and initiatives put forward for this purpose. Accordingly, we invite all respected factions of the Kurdistan Parliament to fulfill our historic and legal duty together as soon as possible and take steps toward completing the procedures and duties of the parliament’s first session and electing its presidium; as an important beginning for activating the Kurdistan Parliament and in respect and response to the demands of all segments and classes of the Kurdistan Region to accelerate the activation of parliament.”
The Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc also added: “Our bloc reaffirms its commitment to KDP voters and the people of Kurdistan as a whole, and we believe that the duty of preserving the structure of the Kurdistan Region and its supreme interests rests with all parliamentary factions and representatives. Therefore, the activation of parliament must not be tied to any political or party interests and disputes, because this issue represents the legitimacy of the people’s vote and the legitimacy of the continued existence of the structure of the Kurdistan Region. Finally, we hope that this unfavorable situation will pass and that, with a shared outlook and to advance the interests of the Kurdistan Region, we will all, together, respect the rights and will of the people of Kurdistan by activating parliament and move together toward a new stage of parliamentary work and advancing the legal process and governance of the Kurdistan Region in all dimensions.”
