The Kurdistan Region General Traffic Directorate denied rumors of issuing codes and security plates for unregistered vehicles, warning that only traffic directorates are officially authorized to issue plates and that violators will face legal action.
Today, Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the Kurdistan Region General Traffic Directorate said in a statement: Some media channels have reported the issuance of codes and security plates for unregistered and undocumented vehicles. These rumors have no connection to the traffic directorates, which are the only official bodies authorized to register and issue plates for cars and motorcycles, in accordance with the laws and guidelines governing traffic affairs in the Kurdistan Region.
The statement said that, apart from the directives of the Ministry of Interior and the official procedures followed by the traffic directorates, no other institution, under any name or for any reason, has the duty or authority to establish procedures for registering vehicles.
The Kurdistan Region Traffic Directorate also stressed that any vehicle that has not officially been issued a plate from one of the traffic directorates in one of the four governorates of the Kurdistan Region, or that does not carry plates from the governorates of Iraq or official foreign plates, is considered to have “no plate.” Any vehicle of this type that comes to the attention of traffic police patrols and teams will face strict legal measures.
