Work on the first phase of the heavy wastewater treatment plant project in Erbil city, near the village of "Arab Kand," is continuing and good progress has been made; it is considered the largest environmental infrastructure project at the level of the Kurdistan Region.
The foundation stone of this strategic project was laid on Sunday (16 of November 2025) by Masrour Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, with the aim of fundamentally addressing Erbil's heavy wastewater problem and protecting the capital's environment.
The project is being implemented on more than 200 dunams of land and consists of 7 phases; once completed, it will have the daily capacity to purify and treat 266 thousand cubic meters of wastewater, which will help clean the area's environment and enable the reuse of water for various fields.
This project is one of the important infrastructure projects within the framework of the ninth cabinet's program of the Kurdistan Regional Government, with the aim of protecting citizens' public health, preventing groundwater pollution, and developing basic services.
