Andy Burnham, the British prime minister, said in an official statement that the attempt to attack the Royal Air Force base “Fairford” (RAF Fairford) had been organised under the guidance and planning of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. He also threatened to impose new sanctions on Tehran in response to that hostile act.
On Monday, 12 October, while British police had earlier arrested five people near the air base, the British government, in its latest diplomatic and security response, imposed sanctions on two Iranian nationals linked to officials in Tehran who had been involved in carrying out hostile activities abroad.
Fairford air base is one of the United States’ most important military and strategic bases on the European continent, used primarily for the takeoff and landing of heavy, long-range B-1B bombers.
Although Tehran officially denies these allegations, Western allies consider the Revolutionary Guard the main source of security threats against that base.
