The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Electricity and the Brightness Project disclosed the final statistics for their electricity debt discount campaign in a joint statement, announcing that the Regional Government forgave more than 403 billion dinars in old debts incurred before the project began. As a result, more than 70% of electricity subscribers across the Kurdistan Region currently have no old debts remaining and their accounts have been cleared.
According to the data, the campaign, which included discounts of up to 50%, began on 3 August and continued until 18 October, benefiting 951 thousand and 98 subscribers. In exchange for the government’s forgiveness of 403 billion and 130 million dinars, 500 billion and 610 million dinars in old debts were collected from subscribers. These collected revenues, together with the Brightness Project’s own revenues, have been used to cover part of the electricity sector’s substantial expenses, which currently exceed 350 billion dinars per month.
The Ministry of Electricity clarified that subscribers who still have old debts and did not benefit from the discount opportunity will have their debts automatically converted into long-term installments and added to their monthly electricity bills, without receiving any discount.
Another part of the statement said that, under the Brightness Project, announced at the end of 2024 by Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, more than 90% of Kurdistan’s citizens have now become beneficiaries of 24-hour uninterrupted electricity. It also said that, under the new pricing system, 80% of citizens—particularly low-income classes and groups—pay less than they previously paid for private generators and national electricity, while work is continuing to ensure that uninterrupted electricity reaches all homes and commercial premises in Kurdistan by the end of 2026.
