The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government issued a statement on developments in Sinjar, expressing its concern over the unilateral measures taken by the federal government in Sinjar. It also emphasizes that, in the event that the agreement is not implemented, they must return to the genuine opinion and will of the people of Sinjar and the Yazidis.
The text of the statement:
A statement concerning developments in Sinjar
The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government is concernedly monitoring the understandings being reached by the federal government regarding the situation in Sinjar, unilaterally and without consultation with the Kurdistan Regional Government. We emphasize here that any measure of this kind is contrary to the Sinjar Agreement, which was signed in October 2020 under the supervision of the United Nations.
We remind all sides that Sinjar and Mount Sinjar were liberated with the blood of the heroic Peshmerga martyrs 500 and wounded 3000, and respect must be shown for those sacrifices and struggles.
Imposing an unwanted security and administrative reality outside the legitimate institutions will further complicate the situation in the area and undermine the normalization process. The only proper solution is the full implementation of the Sinjar Agreement, because it is the sole guarantee for establishing a legitimate administration by the area’s genuine representatives, restarting reconstruction, and stabilizing security—conditions that are essential for the voluntary and dignified return of hundreds of thousands of Yazidi sisters and brothers to their homeland.
We call on the federal government to abide by the Sinjar Agreement and all the successive political agreements and government programs of the federal government that have been carried out in the areas of administration, security and reconstruction. If implementing these agreements is difficult, let them return to the views and will of the people of Sinjar, particularly the Yazidis; whatever they consider preferable and whatever they want, let them decide on it, and let everyone abide by and support their choice, because the stability of the area and the peace of its people are above every other interest and objective.
