Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a post on the social media platform X today, Tuesday, 20 October, that he had held comprehensive consultations with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, in Tehran. According to him, a wide range of international and regional developments—including Ukraine, Lebanon, Palestine and Yemen—were discussed and exchanged views on, from Europe to West Asia.
The Iranian foreign minister identified the development of economic relations and nuclear energy as other key topics of the talks, stressing that ties between Tehran and Moscow under current conditions are deeper and closer than at any other time in the history of relations between the two countries.
Araghchi also described relations between the two countries as “strategic” at a joint press conference with Lavrov, noting that the implementation of the comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement had opened new horizons in relations between the two sides. He identified issues related to the Caucasus, the Caspian Sea, the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf as other matters raised in the talks.
Iran’s top diplomat, accusing the United States and Israel of creating insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and expressing concern over attacks on vessels in the Caspian Sea, stressed the need for a political resolution to regional challenges.
For his part, Sergei Lavrov stressed Moscow’s determination to continue comprehensive engagement with Tehran and announced that Russia had sent humanitarian aid to Iran under wartime conditions. The Russian foreign minister also, referring to a 21 percent increase in trade between the two countries over the past year, stressed the advancement of joint projects in the oil, gas and Rasht–Astara railway sectors.
