On Wednesday, 21 October 2026, in Pirmam, President Masoud Barzani received Ambassador Steve Fagin, the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Iraq.
During the meeting, attended by U.S. Consul General in Erbil Gwendolyn Wendy Green, the situation in Iraq was discussed, and Ambassador Steve Fagin thanked President Barzani for his role in consistently supporting Iraq’s political process from close range. For his part, President Barzani indicated that they had organized their relations with Iraq on the basis of the constitution and the principles of partnership, balance, and consensus. President Barzani also pointed out that if Iraq’s previous governments had adhered to these principles, much greater achievements would have been realized for Iraq and all its components generally.
President Barzani also stated that they support Iraq’s current prime minister within the framework of the constitution and the protection of the legitimate rights of the people of Kurdistan enshrined in the constitution. President Barzani further stressed support for Kurdistan’s components, particularly Christian brothers and sisters, on the basis of respect, constitutional rights, and partnership. He indicated that the components themselves must decide their own fate. President Barzani highlighted the importance of amending the election law so that Christian brothers and sisters can have their own will represented and no one makes decisions on their behalf.
During the continuation of the meeting, the situation in the region was discussed. President Barzani stressed that our policy had been clear and transparent from the outset, and that we had not been part of the complications and would not become part of the conflicts and disputes. Nevertheless, we believe it is best for all sides to resolve their problems through talks, dialogue, and diplomatic means.
For their part, the American delegation reaffirmed their commitment to the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and stated that the end of the coalition’s mission does not mean the end of the United States’ commitment to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. In the past, the coalition was here at the request of the Iraqi government and, in cooperation with the Peshmerga and Iraqi forces, defeated ISIS. They also stressed that, in terms of security, economic, political, and military matters, the United States remains committed, within the framework of bilateral relations, to preserving stability and its partnership with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
