As part of efforts to strengthen relations and joint cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the European Union, a Kurdistan Region delegation visited two important European Union institutions working in the fields of humanitarian aid and crisis management.
The Kurdistan Region delegation consisted of Dr. Dilawar Khalid Ajgayi, Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government to the European Union, and Sarwa Rasul, Director General of the Kurdistan Region Joint Crisis Coordination Center. They visited the European Union’s main humanitarian aid office in Brussels and met with the Deputy Director of Humanitarian Aid for the Middle East and Africa.
At the meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of continuing the European Union’s humanitarian support and cooperation for the Kurdistan Region, particularly in providing assistance to refugees and displaced people residing in the Kurdistan Region. A request was also made for the European Union to continue its humanitarian role and support to reduce the burdens and challenges facing the Kurdistan Region.
On the same day, the delegation visited the European Union’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), with the aim of learning firsthand about its operating mechanisms, coordination systems and new methods of responding to crises and disasters.
During the visit, particular importance was given to how advanced technology and modern information and monitoring systems can be used to accelerate and improve humanitarian responses when natural and human-caused disasters occur, such as floods, earthquakes, migration and various crises.
The discussions also addressed the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation between the relevant institutions of the European Union and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in the areas of exchanging experience, benefiting from modern science and technology, developing institutional capacities and raising preparedness levels for confronting crises.
The visit is an important step toward consolidating institutional relations between the Kurdistan Region and the European Union, and efforts to strengthen the Kurdistan Region’s capacity in crisis management, rapid responses to disasters and the provision of humanitarian assistance.
