Today, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Iranian police reported in a statement that one of its personnel had been killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen in the country’s southeast. According to Iran’s official television, Lieutenant Hojat Vafakardeh, an officer with the Criminal Investigation Police, was killed in a shooting by unidentified gunmen in Saravan County, Sistan and Baluchestan Province.
The statement said police and security forces were continuing efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack. No group has so far claimed responsibility. Meanwhile, the Tasnim news agency reported that in the city of Iranshahr, in the same province, an armed man was killed and two others arrested in a clash with police forces.
Sistan and Baluchestan Province, which borders both Pakistan and Afghanistan, is considered one of Iran’s poorest provinces. Most of its population is made up of Sunni Baluchis. The region has long witnessed ongoing fighting and clashes among security forces, armed groups and drug traffickers.
The latest developments come after the Mehr news agency reported last Monday that armed groups had attacked a vehicle carrying engineers and contractors in the same area. On the same day, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had killed an armed man in an ambush and arrested several others. Last Thursday, Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence also announced the dismantling of four cells of extremist militants, the arrest of 16 people and the detention of three others on suspicion of spying for the United States and Israel. The announcements came after two security personnel were killed in two separate attacks in the province in mid-October.
