Today, Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Kurdistan Parliament continued its first session with a majority of lawmakers present and, through a legal and democratic process, elected its presidency board. Mahmoud Mohammed, spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, issued a statement on the matter.
The KDP spokesman said: "While congratulating all the people of Kurdistan, we congratulate the speaker of parliament, the deputy speaker and the parliament secretary, and wish them success in carrying out this national duty. This was a belated but necessary step to protect the constitutional status of the Kurdistan Region. Unfortunately, for two years, because of political decisions by the leaderships of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the New Generation Movement, this legitimate institution of the region, which represents the voice and will of the people, had been paralyzed."
The statement said: "Today, the majority of lawmakers from the various factions, conscious of their national duty, respecting the people’s vote and committed to their legal oath, advanced the democratic process and brought an end to the legal vacuum and the imposition of a political minority. This came despite the many threats made against some lawmakers and their families. This is a dangerous indication and a threat to democracy and the will of the people, and reflects a mentality that does not serve the democratization of the various spheres of life in Kurdistan’s society."
Mahmoud Mohammed also said: "We hope that all sides will respect the wishes and will of the people and the democratic process. The Kurdistan Parliament is the genuine venue for political and legal dialogue and a factor in Kurdistan’s internal unity and cohesion."
The statement by the KDP spokesman concluded: "The reactivation of parliament is not directed against any person or side; its doors are open to everyone. We hope that, following the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament, the factions of the other parties will also take a positive decision and participate in protecting the legitimacy and status of the Kurdistan Region. We also hope this step will encourage the assumption of shared responsibility for advancing the Kurdistan Region during this sensitive phase and bringing all viewpoints closer together in the service of the people and Kurdistan’s future."
