Today, Sunday, November 8, 2026, the naval forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement that two noncompliant oil tankers—one in the eastern area of the Strait of Hormuz and the other inside the strait itself—struck naval mines and are now engulfed in intense fires.
The statement said the two vessels had committed several violations, including switching off their navigation and positioning systems (GPS) in an attempt to use routes prohibited by Iran. However, the Revolutionary Guard did not disclose the names of the vessels or the identities of their countries.
The incident comes as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have continued since the outbreak of Iran’s war at the end of last February. Iran has imposed strict restrictions on maritime traffic and required vessels to use routes designated by Iranian authorities.
Meanwhile, the United States has imposed sanctions on Iranian ports and is providing assistance to oil tankers to pass through the strategic waterway, through which, before the war, one-fifth of the world’s oil—20%—was transported.
