Tensions between the United States and Iran have entered a dangerous new phase, as US President Donald Trump has openly kept the military option on the table as leverage should the Republican Party suffer defeat in the congressional midterm elections.
According to information published by Axios, the United States has warned its allies in the Gulf region to prepare for a short, intense military campaign whose primary objective would be to force Iran to sign a new agreement or completely dismantle its nuclear program. Meanwhile, MSNBC reported that Trump plans to launch the military operation just one day after the elections—on November 4.
In response to these developments, the Gulf states have intensified efforts to de-escalate the situation, concerned about a harsh Iranian reaction. Experts, meanwhile, believe this is now Iran’s best opportunity to sign an agreement before unexpected changes occur and prevent the destruction of its country’s security infrastructure.
