The Israeli president’s move came after a series of talks and consultations with the leaders of political parties and parliamentary blocs, during which Eisenkot secured the majority of lawmakers’ nominations and support for taking on the task.
The Israeli Presidency said in a statement that President Herzog had formally notified Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yeshar party, of his decision to task him with forming the government.
According to the statement, Eisenkot is scheduled to receive the formal mandate tomorrow, Sunday, at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jerusalem, allowing him to begin talks with the various parties within the constitutionally stipulated timeframe to form a coalition for the new government.
