The future of Manchester City star Rodri has become a major talking point in the summer transfer market after intense competition emerged between Real Madrid and Barcelona for the midfielder.
Rodri is seeking a new experience outside England, particularly in Spain, as he wants to return to his home country. He previously played for Atlético Madrid before joining Manchester City, where he went on to win every major honour available with the club.
For several weeks, international media reports had insisted that Real Madrid had reached an agreement with Rodri and were close to completing the deal. However, what happened behind the scenes was entirely different.
Pablo Baquero, Rodri's agent, revealed new details in comments to Catalan radio station Cadena SER. He said Rodri was very grateful for the respect Real Madrid had shown him during two weeks of talks.
Baquero added that Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and the club's management had made every effort to sign Rodri and submitted an offer that was difficult to refuse. Rodri nevertheless made his decision and told his agent: "Thank them, but I am going to Barcelona."
Rodri's agent explained that, out of respect for Real Madrid's approach, he had to contact the club's management and inform them of the player's decision instead of opening talks with Barcelona without their knowledge.
