Messi appeared in his final match against the Benin national team, with the game ending 3-0 in Argentina’s favor. Messi delivered a high-level performance, scoring 1 goal and creating 2 goals for his teammates.
Speaking to fans at Monumental Stadium, Messi said emotionally: It is difficult for me to speak tonight; I have many feelings. The first person I think of is my father. Thank you very much; it was a great honor for me to defend this team’s colors for many years.
Messi referred to his history with the national team and said: Even in difficult moments, I never gave up. At the previous World Cup, we had a great dream and came close, but despite all our efforts, we were unable to win the title. I am proud of my teammates with whom I shared the dressing room; they were warriors and gave everything for victory.
Despite stepping away from international football, Messi announced that from now on he would be a supporter standing behind those players.
